Ostracism

Per dictionary.com,

exclusion, by general consent, from social acceptance, privileges, friendship, etc.

Such is the experience of Olive Penderghast (played by Emma Stone) in Easy A, a movie that reaches into the results of ostracism and bullying. Yeah, of course it’s a caricature of reality, but not by as much as you might think. Modeled after Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter – and Stone’s character wears a scarlet A throughout much of the movie. Hard to score friends when you’re fighting a losing battle against your own reputation.

I love this movie, by the way.
