Harley Quinn and the Joker - which is the codependent?

Codependency is a tendency to be more passive and/or care-taking than, well, most people. Folks who are codependent are often drawn to narcissists. In short, people who are excessively thinking of others are attracted to people who are excessively thinking of themselves.

Wikipedia goes on:

Codependency may also be characterized by denial, low self-esteem, excessive compliance, and/or control patterns.

So you might be showing signs of codependency IF…

  • Denial. You mask your real feelings, in a “concern for others” disguise.
  • Low self-esteem. You’re never good enough. You don’t want praise. You don’t ask for help.
  • Compliance. You ignore your own feelings, interests, and even your values in favor of others’.
  • Control. You need to be needed, to be heard, and to influence.

Some of this can describe me at times, and I have to be careful. (I watch for the “full of himself” signs too.) The person who’s like this is NOT a good friend, and is not likely to enjoy a good healthy friendship even if it does come along. Which it probably won’t. Because the person who’s like this might well be fixated on a relationship with a narcissist. A codependent, like Harley Quinn, has her very own “Mister J.” 😦
